Summary
Dive Safety Manager
Travel to either McMurdo Station (Ross Island, Antarctica) or Palmer Station (Anvers Island, Antarctica)
The Dive Safety Manager will perform initial and ongoing gap analysis (cradle to grave) on the OPP Dive safety program.
Responsibilities
Identify areas of improvement for the program
Implement corrective procedures that add value to the risk mitigation system
Ensure compliance with the Dive Section of the NSF OPP Safety and Occupational Health policy https://www.nsf.gov/geo/opp/documents/policy/NSF-GEO-OPP-SOH-POL-2000-10.pdf )
Review for final approval, dive plans and diver applications submitted to USAP by the OPP Diving Standards within seventy-two (72) hours of receipt
Review dive logs to verify dives were conducted by approved dive plans
Provide written monthly and annual reports on the status of the USAP diving program and activities conducted for the previous reporting period
Provide pre-travel requests and post-travel reports for all DSO-related travel to Antarctica, reporting on pre-travel objectives, and post-travel accomplishments and audit findings
Coordinate, manage, and report on evaluations of diving equipment for use in the USAP diving program
Provide a written report in response to diving-related accidents requiring the establishment of a Board of Investigation
Assist the OPP SOHO and SDCB in coordinating and conducting the annual Scientific Diving Control Board meeting
Present the results of the USAP Annual Diving Program report at the annual meeting
Annually travel to either McMurdo Station (Ross Island, Antarctica) or Palmer Station (Anvers Island, Antarctica), during the austral summer season to conduct an annual audit of USAP diving safety standards and procedures
Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED equivalent required
3+ years of experience with scientific diving in Antarctica or similar environments, specifically in the McMurdo area and/or at Palmer Station
Under-ceiling scuba diving (either ice or caves) within the last three (3) years
Experience as an active underwater instructor from an internationally recognized certifying agency
Current authorization/certification as a scientific research diver within the last five (5) years
Cold water scuba diving (45 degrees Fahrenheit or below) where the use of cold water diving equipment/suits experience and specific training required within the last three (3) years
Background check required
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Experience with rebreathers
Experience working on or with a Scientific Diving Control Board
Experience writing diving safety policies and procedures
Knowledge of OSHA diving standards and the exemption for scientific diving preferred
Experience performing or overseeing operational and maintenance diving with surface-supplied air
Experience reviewing military, government, contractor, or research pre-dive plans
Ability to pass and maintain the NSF Office of Polar Programs required physical to travel to Antarctica
Ability to travel to Antarctica for up to 2 weeks a year (at one time) and possibly on short notice should there be a diving accident
Experience serving on diving accident boards or individually investigating dive accidents
